Junior School Music

Music education within the classroom

The Orff approach to music education, which was adopted at All Saints’ College Junior School in 2004 has been flourishing, and is resulting in a high standard of music participation in the classroom. This is also reflected in the growth and development in the choral and instrumental programs. The Orff approach to music education is a holistic and all inclusive approach, where all students are actively involved in music-making, composing, creating and performing

The music program is developmental and at every year level, the students are encouraged to create, invent and compose their own songs, speech rhymes and dances.

In Kindergarten and Pre-Primary, the focus is on developing a repertoire of songs especially selected to foster tuneful and accurate pitch and singing techniques. Creative movement encourages spatial and body awareness and moving to music.

In Year 1 and 2, students begin to develop speech rhymes and begin part work. Rhythmic work is applied to percussion instruments and dance introduces simple folk dance steps.

The Year 3 and 4 students begin to improvise on melodic percussion instruments. They begin to read and compose music works using simple graphic notation. In creative movement and dance, the students begin to explore traditional choreographies.

In Year 5 and 6, the students can aurally recognise and describe musical features of a work and begin to compose using selected musical form (eg. Rondo, canon or theme and variation). They study the history and musical styles of composers and begin working with harmony. In creative dance and movement, they develop choreographies and build a repertoire of dance movements and steps.

Through singing, percussion work, melodic instrumental work on xylophones, glockenspiels, metallophones and marimbas, dance and creative movement, students are led on a path to empower them to be creative, and take charge of their own learning.

Choral Music

Choral singing is a very important component of the music programme, and all students are given the opportunity to experience choral singing within the classroom. Three extracurricular choirs provide additional opportunity for interested students:

Instrumental work

A Suzuki violin/cello program is also offered to students from kindergarten –year 2.

All year 3 students receive tuition in a string instrument or recorder as part of their curriculum.

All yr 5 students are given the opportunity to learn a wind instrument as part of their curriculum.

There are 2 string ensembles in the Junior School to provide additional developmental opportunities for all students at their level of performance.

Students have the opportunity to learn guitar, percussion, piano or any orchestral instrument of their choice. Selection is made as to suitability of instrument to the age of the student. African drumming is offered as an extracurricular activity for years 4, 5 and 6.

To provide all the students who are learning an instrument with at least one solo performance opportunity, four soirées are held during the year.  Many students are also entered into the instrumental and vocal sections of the local Eisteddfods.

Incursions

Students are given the opportunity to hear professional musicians with a music incursion every year. On occasion, musicians provide workshops with class groups or ensembles. This opportunity provides stimulation and motivation which enhances their music education experience.

Music is now permeating many aspects of school life, and all students are involved at their own levels of development.  It stretches the gifted and talented, but also aids the development of the student still coping with learning problems. It is all-inclusive, child focussed, and there is a place for everyone.
