The First Day of School Experience: Tips for a Smooth Day One

Student wellbeing is at the heart of the All Saints' College experience and the College ensures that young people feel safe and connected throughout their entire educational journey, including the very first day.

Starting school can be a big step for both young people and parents. Whether your child is starting school for the first time, is new to the All Saints' College community, or is looking ahead to a new academic year, the first day of school can be filled with a mix of excitement and nerves. There are a few simple steps parents can take to help their child feel calm and settled.

  • Talk about the first day of school in a positive light. Encourage your child to think about the fun things they will get to do, such as making new friends and learning new things.
  • Help your child prepare for the first day of school by laying out their clothes and backpack the night before. This will help them feel more in control.
  • Establish a morning routine that is consistent and easy to follow. This will help your child feel more comfortable and less overwhelmed.
  • Listen to your child's concerns and feelings about starting school. Let them express their emotions and validate them. Reassure them that it is normal to feel a bit nervous and excited about the first day of school.
  • Accompany your child to school on the first day, if possible. This can help ease any anxiety they may be feeling.
  • Encourage your child to participate in activities they are interested in such as Cocurricular opportunities, Sports or the Arts. This will help them make friends and feel more connected to the College community. The broad range of Cocurricular opportunities available to students at All Saints' College can be explored on MyASC.
  • Be a good listener when your child comes home from school. Ask them about their day and listen to their stories. Showing interest in their school life will make them feel valued.

Starting school can be daunting but with the right support and encouragement from parents, they can feel calm, safe and connected, as well as excited for the upcoming year and the possibilities it holds.
