ASC Receives National Leadership Award for New Metrics Partner Schools

All Saints’ College is proud to be one of 41 Australian and New Zealand partner schools recognised through the prestigious 2025 Australian Council for Educational Leaders (ACEL) National Leadership Award. The award is presented to The University of Melbourne’s New Metrics for Success Research-Practice Partnership and its network of schools.

This national award celebrates the bold, collaborative leadership at the heart of New Metrics, an initiative bringing together 41 schools and the University of Melbourne to reimagine how learning is assessed, recognised and valued.

The ACEL National Awards Presentation will take place in Sydney on Monday 29 September as part of its 3-day national conference, Amplifying Every Voice.

This award recognises the contributions of educators and leaders across the partnership, including All Saints’ College, who are helping drive a future-focused vision for schooling and co-designing a system that reflects the skills and needs of today’s learners.

“Receiving the ACEL National Leadership Award is a deeply affirming moment for All Saints’ College,” said Shannon Armitage, Director of Senior School (Teaching and Learning) and a key driver in the New Metrics project at ASC.

“It recognises not only our five-year partnership with the University of Melbourne through the New Metrics for Success initiative, but also the transformative impact of this work on education – here in WA, across Australia and internationally.”

The New Metrics for Success partnership is about expanding how student success is defined and celebrated. Instead of relying solely on traditional grades and test scores, the partnership explores ways to identify and measure important competencies like creativity, collaboration, ethical thinking and agency. These skills are essential for life beyond school and provide young people with meaningful ways to show what they know, who they are and what they can do.

This work has encouraged All Saints’ educators to think differently about how students show growth and success. Students are now offered more meaningful ways to reflect on their learning, showcase their strengths and build confidence in their future pathways.

The College’s partnership with Melbourne Metrics is underpinned by robust research and close collaboration with other schools nationwide. As a ‘first-mover’ school, All Saints’ has contributed valuable data to help refine how student competencies are assessed and shared ideas for new ways to build and evidence these skills.

“This collaboration has also opened the door to rich, collegial engagement with other schools,” said Shannon.

“Our ‘critical friends’ have challenged us to think deeply, offered valuable insights and helped us stay solutions-focused in the face of complex educational challenges. The shared commitment to meaningful change has been a cornerstone of the project’s success,” she added.

On campus at All Saints’ College, the impact is clear.

“One of the most powerful shifts has been the strengthening of cross-departmental collaboration,” said Shannon.

“We now ensure that each student’s competencies are assessed by at least two educators; whether in Outdoor Learning Programs, English, Art, Engineering or other areas. This helps us capture students at their best, in the environments where they thrive and makes our assessments more reliable,” she said.

The College has also embraced the development of holistic learner profiles. These profiles go beyond grades and academic achievements to highlight students’ strengths and growth, supporting pathways into further study or employment.

The Australian Council for Educational Leaders is a not-for-profit company that actively supports the development of educational leadership capabilities across Australia.
