Chasing Dreams and Basketball Glory in America

Jaide McPhee, a dedicated Year 12 student, is preparing to embark on an exciting adventure next year as part of a study and play program, which will take her from Perth to America to pursue her love for basketball at the collegiate level. Having started her basketball journey at the age of 8, Jaide has always been drawn to the sport, despite exploring various other activities along the way.

“I’ve been playing at a high level in WABL throughout all of high school,” Jaide shared. “It only hit me in Year 12 that I need to decide what to do with my life, and I decided to do something that I love doing. I realised I’ve never pushed myself to that next level, and realised this was a great opportunity to push myself into something new. While it’s scary, I’m excited to do it!”

Jaide’s decision to move to America was solidified during a conversation with Chris, the director of the recruitment company, at the All Saints' College Futures Expo. “He explained that if I want to play college basketball, this is the pathway to do it,” she recalled. After submitting an application and a video showcasing her skills, Chris confirmed that Jaide was more than capable of joining the program.

As she prepares for this significant change, Jaide is focused on training, studying for her SAT, and saving money for her journey.

Looking forward to working with a new team, Jaide expressed, “For me, I’m looking forward to establishing a clean slate. I can start fresh, change my weaknesses, and find a coach and team that share my values and morals."

Jaide plans to pursue a two-year teaching degree at a junior college, with the option to transfer to either NCAA Division 1 or Division 2, or potentially return to Perth for her final two years. “There are thousands of junior colleges across the country, and they take their sports very seriously,” she said. “The culture around sport there is really big, and that’s something that drew me in—the culture and passion.”

While Jaide has a clear goal of becoming a teacher, she remains open to exploring her options. “I’ve always loved being a teacher, being a mentor, and coaching basketball,” she shared. “I don’t know if I want to do it straight away, but it’s something I’m considering.”

Currently, Jaide is in the recruitment process, with coaches starting to take notice of her talent. To those considering a similar path, she advises, “If you have a passion for sport, it doesn’t matter how far you want to go; this pathway is such a good experience to try something new. Being able to get a degree in something that you’re passionate about is invaluable. It’s great for someone who doesn’t know what they want to do. Take that leap and try new things; you never know where it could lead you—maybe even to a semi-pro career.”

As Jaide prepares for this life-changing move, she acknowledges the challenges ahead. “Moving countries is daunting, but it opens so many doors,” she said. “Perth is small, and it’s something that you should consider.” With her passion for basketball and a bright future ahead, Jaide McPhee is ready to embrace the opportunities that await her in America.
