Future-Ready Forum: Vision 2025

On Tuesday 19 November, ten students from Years 7 to 9 attended the Future-Ready Forum: Vision 2050 event to celebrate the launch of the Perth 2050 report created by renowned futurist Dr Ben Hamer.  The research was commissioned by the Committee of Perth and SciTech, who are leading the way in provoking conversations and plans to help Perth meet the challenges and opportunities of a predicted population of 3.5 million by 2050.  All Saints’ students have been working with Committee for Perth and Dr Hamer for some time and it was great to see our ideas and perspectives referenced in the Perth 2050 Report.

I felt very privileged to participate in such a significant event. Hearing from the CEOs of SciTech and the Committee of Perth, as well as Dr Hamer, broadened my understanding of what Perth’s future could be like and highlighted the concerns and hopes of Perth residents. In addition to Dr Hamer's presentation, I found the questionnaire session also very inspiring. Dr John Chappell (CEO, SciTech) said we will need to make our careers attractive to overcome the reduced workforce due to our ageing population; and Paula Rogers (CEO, Committee of Perth) talked about the need to connect our communities to avoid loneliness.  Those issues were really interesting, but I appreciated being able to share my ideas in my reflection, about Perth being a leader in the Space Industry in the future.

I believe it is very important for school-aged students to give feedback and share their opinions, as we will be the ones running Perth in 2050. It is crucial to work towards creating the best community we can, and sharing our ideas is a critical part of that process. At the end of the event, three students, including myself, were interviewed by Channel 7 about our views on the report. I think I can speak for everyone that participated in this event when I say it was an inspiring and insightful experience.

The report can be accessed here, and the Channel 7 interviews here: 4pm edition and 6pm edition.
