Gen Connect Builds Meaningful Bonds Across Generations

What began as a casual Xbox gaming session has blossomed into a heartwarming intergenerational connection initiative known as Gen Connect, an ongoing Service Learning project between All Saints College students and residents at RAAFA.

Driven not by a specific activity but by the desire for social connection, the Gen Connect program has expanded organically. Initially involving students visiting RAAFA to play motion-based Xbox games, affectionately dubbed exergaming by the residents, the interactions have grown to include helping with phones and iPads, sharing stories, and even learning new skills. One resident, Beverley, has generously offered to teach students how to crochet, supplying all the books and materials herself.

The last visit for Term 1 held a special surprise. A few Early Childhood Centre (ECC) students made a heartfelt Easter delivery to the residents, complete with chocolate eggs and plenty of smiles. The idea came from the children themselves, who asked to deliver the Easter gifts in person. Their visit was supported by students from Kindy to Year 2, who were tasked with donating eggs as part of their Service Learning activities.

The Year 2 Extension Mathematics group took the opportunity to turn the donation into a data project, collecting and analysing information about the contributions. The students counted more than 110 Easter eggs donated across the Junior School, highlighting not only generosity but cross-curricular learning in action.

Whether through shared gaming, tech troubleshooting, or learning how to crochet, Gen Connect continues to strengthen ties between generations. With students leading the way and residents like Beverley generously giving their time and expertise, this low-key but meaningful initiative is a powerful example of service, connection and mutual respect.
