Meet Sakina: the newest member of the ASC Rowing fleet
There was excitement on and off the water at the first All Schools Regatta of the season, as the ASC Rowing community gathered to officially welcome a brand-new boat to the fleet: Sakina.
Thanks to the generous support of our Parents and Friends’ Association, this vessel now joins the team, carrying with it a name chosen by our own community. After a close vote between three final contenders – SiSu, Samudra and Sakina – it was Sakina that rose to the top.
So, what’s in a name? Sakina is a word rooted in Islamic tradition, describing a sense of divine calm and reassurance in the face of challenge. It’s often compared to Shekhinah in Judaism, both evoking the feeling of being centred, steady and supported when it matters most.
For our rowers, the meaning couldn’t be more fitting. Rowing is more than strength and stamina. It’s about rhythm, connection and keeping calm under pressure. Just like Sakina symbolises peace amidst chaos, rowers know that calmness and clarity are key to pulling together and pushing through.
As part of the naming ceremony, a blessing was shared, capturing the spirit of the boat and the journey ahead:
“May it embody Sakina, the spirit of divine stillness amidst motion… May those who row within it find unity in rhythm, courage in struggle, and serenity in the pursuit of excellence.”
This latest addition to the fleet follows a Rowing Club tradition which involves finding words from different cultures that embody the spirit of rowing and reflect the fun and diversity of the community.
We can’t wait to see Sakina gliding across the water, powered by teamwork, trust and a little bit of calm in the chaos.
