Students Take Part in Life-Changing Kimberley Service Tour with Teach Learn Grow Program

Over the July school holidays, 26 students and 7 staff headed north to remote areas of Western Australia on the Teach Learn Grow (TLG) Service Tour! The tour was a hands-on experience that brought students together from schools across the state. The program supports remote schools while giving ASC students the chance to build connections, learn from others and step outside their comfort zones.

The group began their journey in Broome, enjoying local markets, the museum and Cable Beach before staying overnight at Broome Senior High School. The next day they visited the famous dinosaur footprints at Gantheaume Point before heading to Fitzroy Crossing. From there, they split into three teams to visit host schools in remote areas.

At Fitzroy Valley, students participated in on-country experiences and learned traditional practices creating unforgettable memories. Meanwhile in Bayulu, students joined an end-of-term colour run, making friends and sharing laughter around riverside campfires.

One of the smallest groups visited Muludja Remote Community School, the most isolated of the three communities. “We became really close-knit and had so much fun with the kids,” said Rhys (Year 11). “There were inside jokes, cave explorations and stargazing nights that made it one of the best experiences of my life.”

Felicity (Year 11) shared “Whether helping in classrooms or enduring cold showers and hard floors, I learned so much and made unforgettable memories.”

The TLG program emphasises connection, service and learning from others, offering students a unique opportunity to understand Aboriginal culture in the Kimberley region.

Applications for next year’s tour are now open to Year 10 and 11 students. Additionally, Years 9 and 10 students can look forward to the upcoming Cambodia Service Tour, featuring hands-on projects like house-building and water filter construction.

Mr Paul Green, the program coordinator, will be calling for expressions of interest for the Cambodia trip in early August, with an information session scheduled for Thursday 21 August.

These service tours provide students with amazing opportunities to make a positive impact while gaining new perspectives on the world.
