Year 11 Visual Arts Students Bring Colour and Creativity to E Block
The walls outside the art room in E Block have been given a bold new look, thanks to the creativity and teamwork of our Year 11 Visual Arts General students. The mural, designed by Aurora and brought to life by the class, is a bold and colourful celebration of shape, pattern and collaboration, and draws inspiration from two influential mid-20th-century art movements.
The project began as part of a case study on Hard Edged Art and Op Art, two painting movements that emerged in the 1950s and 1960s. Students explored the works of artists Frank Stella (Hard Edge) and Bridget Riley (Op Art), studying how colour, precision and geometric form can transform a space. Inspired by these movements – and by other large-scale murals that use rhythm, repetition and bold colour palettes – the students developed their own designs to reimagine the exterior of the Art Room.
The mural project ran as a design competition, with Aurora’s concept chosen as the final piece and the Year 11s set to work bringing the winning design to life.
The process involved:
-
Preparing the surface: high-pressure washing and priming the bricks with a specialist sealer.
-
Transferring the design: chalking the geometric layout onto the wall.
-
Painting with precision: applying two coats of each colour using durable mural paints.
-
Finishing touches: crisp white outlines to define every shape.
The result is a stunning mural that enlivens the space and reflects the students’ deep engagement with art history and contemporary practice.

This project stands as a testament to the creativity and dedication of our Year 11 cohort as they turned theory into a vibrant, real-world piece of art that the ASC community can enjoy for years to come.
