Students best in the State in ICAS Mathematics

Students from All Saints’ College achieved outstanding results when they participated in the University of New South Wales International Competitions and Assessments for Schools. Those students whose achievement was outstanding were rewarded with Certificates of Credit, Distinction, High Distinction and Medals.

A Medal recognises the students as being the top performing student in Western Australia for their year group. In 2013, All Saints’ College celebrates the achievement of five Medal recipients.

Edward Yoo (Year 12), Benjamin Chia (Year 11), Jacob Smith (Year 7), Aidan Smith (Year 6) and Joshua Chen (Year 3) have all been awarded a Medal in the 2013 ICAS – Mathematics. This is Edward’s sixth ICAS Medal in Mathematics, Ben’s third, Jacob’s third and Aidan’s second.

The International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) are developed by Educational Assessment Australia (EAA) of the University of New South Wales, and are currently conducted annually across Australia and in 12 other countries. There are over 1.5 million entries worldwide.

The Competitions are for students from Years 3 to 12, and assesses their academic ability in aspects of Mathematics, Science, English, Writing, Computer Skills and Spelling.

“ICAS are excellent independent assessments of the skills that students need in education, the wider community and the workplace of the future,” said Dr. Peter Knapp, Director of EAA.

“One of the special benefits of ICAS is that schools and students receive detailed diagnostic information about their overall performance. ICAS allow students to monitor their progress from year to year and identify individual strengths and weaknesses.”

All Saints’ Mathematics Teacher Mrs Monique Ellement said the Mathematics Extension program at the College has been successfully preparing students for such competitions for some years now.

“We wish to congratulate our very capable Mathematics students who achieve such high accolades time and time again,” she said.
